Johansson can be seen in Cameron Crowe’s family drama We Bought a Zoo, where she plays a zookeeper who teaches Matt Damon’s character about dealing with animals.
“I think that as I get older, I’m now looking at roles that move away from that kind of ingénue mould and are more based on women that are experienced and have had life before the point you find them in,” she shared to New York Magazine.
“That’s refreshing for me. It’s nice to be able to kind of transition into that. I feel like for me, right now, I don’t wanna take on any roles that aren’t challenging in some way. I never wanna play something I’ve done before. I wanna be able to just have everything be hard in some way. Otherwise, what’s the point?”
Johansson, who said that she’d love to see a gritty Black Widow spinoff for her Avengers character, has starred in Lost in Translation, Match Point, The Prestige and Iron Man 2.
However, the 27-year-old actress is also working behind the camera on Summer Crossing.
When asked if the project is still happening, she said: “I hope. It’s a project I’ve been developing for five or six years. I’m writing it right now with Tristine Skyler, so we’ll see.
You have a script and then you take it out and finance it. It’s a big pre-production process, but that’s where my focus is.”
Johansson also recorded a virtual duet with Dean Martin of the classic ‘I’ll Be Home For Christmas’ for Martin’s Christmas album.
