Simon Cowell is already waving the white flag of defeat in the Christmas chart battle that will see X Factor alumni Little Mix go head-to head with the Military Wives.
The TV mogul appeared to concede that Gareth Malone’s Military Wives
would snatch the Christmas No.1 spot after X Factor winners Little Mix
suffered the lowest sales figures from a debut single in seven years.
Mr Cowell tweeted: ‘Congrats to Little Mix & congrats to Military Wives. It’s a great cause & a worthy Christmas No.1.’
Little Mix limped to the No.1 spot on Sunday night with their cover of
Damien Rice’s hit Cannonball.
Although 15million viewers tuned in to watch The X Factor final, the track sold just 210,000 copies in its first week.
Single
releases are usually timed to coincide with the week of the Christmas
No.1 but this year, programme bosses released the track a week early.
Little
Mix can, however, take comfort in the fact their single achieved the
biggest first week sales for a single so far this year. It also outsold
the rest of the week’s top five combined.
The No.1 will be announced during a special Christmas Day Top of the Pops on BBC One at 2pm.
